Who doesn’t love a good dose of beautiful, kind or soul stirring words? I love them even more when woven together in rhyme and metre echoing thoughts and longings I have never been able to articulate. This is why poetry is such as essential part of our home education.

About this time 2 years ago, I was right where you are now. Nervous and self-doubting as I contemplated the idea of taking my son out of school.
The idea of home education was foreign to me or anyone close I knew. However, as my confident son’s joy and self-esteem began to visibly diminished, I could no longer hide behind mantras of grit and resilience to rationalise my deep fear of losing my social status. I had to pay attention to his mental health and general well being.
2 years on, I still maintain taking the plunge was the bravest thing I’d ever done. I’m a better woman and mother for it. Above all, my son is thriving in every way.

Anyone can home educate… I mean anyone! All you really need is the ability to read and take notes. You don’t need the patience of a saint, nor do you need to pay a host of expensive tutors – virtual or otherwise. Just being a loving parent who wants what is best for your child qualifies you to facilitate their learning! The internet is brimming with information and resources to fill and stimulate the minds of you and your children! Worry not, dear parents!

I started home educating my one and only ever-so-engaging, funny, creative, parkour and skateboard loving 9-year-old Sonshine, seven months ago. So far, my only regret is not starting sooner. We are a small family surrounded by a big love circle, in a fairly quaint part of West London. Fun fact: we once lived and worked in Qatar for a long stretch.

Springtime is, hands down, my favourite time of year. It’s symbolism of new beginnings, the burst of colours and crisp, fresh air fill me with much hope. To me, nothing sings spring is here better than when the cherry blossoms come out to play. My heart literally throws a party of its own.

Without a shadow of a doubt, being a mother is the single most transformational thing that’s ever happened to me.
