New from the blog…

Having my son narrate back a story I read aloud to him is a staple in our Morning Time ritual. This video shows my sonshine narrating a Ghanaian Bra Anansi story in true griot style –‘Why Ants Carry Big Bundles. As a family with one child, we are always looking for...

Let’s talk Diversity in Home Ed Curriculum, shall we?If you’ve followed my home-ed journey for a while, you would know that I am a big fan of  both the Charlotte Mason and Christian Classical Education approaches. It’s been ‘thought-provoking’ to read the recent...

Our story: our mission to bring cultural diversity to a mainly Western Liberal Arts Christian home education context

Now this is the story all about how My life got flipped, turned upside down And I'd like to take a minute just sit right there I'll tell you”* why I launched Homegrown Sonshine. Contrary to what most people thought, our launch at the wake of COVID 19 in April, wasn’t...

Why Parents Need to Rethink the Normalcy of The “New Normal”

Why Parents Need to Rethink the Normalcy of The “New Normal” With almost 3 or 4 weeks into our current global health crisis depending on your geographical location, it is not surprising that majority of parents who have suddenly been thrown into home-schooling are...

Home Educating in the time of COVID-19

Anyone can home educate… I mean anyone! All you really need is the ability to read and take notes. You don’t need the patience of a saint, nor do you need to pay a host of expensive tutors – virtual or otherwise. Just being a loving parent who wants what is best for your child qualifies you to facilitate their learning! The internet is brimming with information and resources to fill and stimulate the minds of you and your children! Worry not, dear parents!

Introducing Us

I started home educating my one and only ever-so-engaging, funny, creative, parkour and skateboard loving 9-year-old Sonshine, seven months ago. So far, my only regret is not starting sooner. We are a small family surrounded by a big love circle, in a fairly quaint part of West London. Fun fact: we once lived and worked in Qatar for a long stretch.

Finding beauty in a time of fear

Springtime is, hands down, my favourite time of year. It’s symbolism of new beginnings, the burst of colours and crisp, fresh air fill me with much hope. To me, nothing sings spring is here better than when the cherry blossoms come out to play. My heart literally throws a party of its own.

Navigating Motherhood and Purpose

Without a shadow of a doubt, being a mother is the single most transformational thing that’s ever happened to me.

Our Insta-Stories…

High on Energy

Yesterday, we ventured into a territory I’ve been holding back on for a while. Physics and Chemistry are foreign languages to me. As soon as I could help it, age 13 to be precise, I streamed into Liberal Arts so I’d never have to study them again.

Time Traveling Through the Ages

You would not believe it if I told you but Sonshine and I are now time-travellers. In the last four months we’ve travelled 5,000 years from Ancient Sumer to Medieval Britain.

Raising Butterflies

We’ve been raising caterpillars and butterflies for the past three weeks. We’ve become experts on Painted Lady Butterflies, and have read about, drawn, modelled and recently watched a fantastic @curiositysteam documentary on their migration from Morocco to Europe.

Bodiam Castle

My teeny iPhone camera does not even begin to capture the imposing magnificence of this 14th century moated masterpiece.

In Search of Sunflowers

May has flown by so quickly, along with our fascinating study of the life and work of Vincent Van Gogh. His story is not the easiest or most inspiring to share with a young child. However, thanks to Home Ed, I have the freedom to coach such sensitive life lessons...
